Spain were the FIFA tournament favourite's and were expected to win the world cup thanks to their superb showing in the European league over the last few years. The Netherlands have always played competitive in FIFA and have given the best of teams some hard times but are generally considered a middle tier team. Their wins in this world cup have really shocked the best of teams, Brazil, and all others. The match between the two was sure to be a firecracker.

The game started off with the roar of the crowd gathered and the buzzing of the vuvuzelas pushing the teams to get on with the game. Spain were looking in great form as they started the game by dominating possession of the ball like they did against Germany. The Dutch were forced to play inside their own half and their goal keeper was called into action just 5 minutes into the game when Sergio Ramos shot in with a header from a free kick by Xavi. A few minutes later it was Ramos who came back to haunt the Dutch with some excellent dribbling and fast breaks to get past the defenders he was unable to complete his shots thanks to the great work done by the goal keeper.

Iniesta was the match winner for Spain

Netherlands fought back with some good defensive play as they shored up the holes in their game. Unfortunately for them they pushed a little too hard and ended up receiving a couple of yellow cards by the time the first half whistle was blown. The Dutch had their moments in the later part of the first half as Robben sent a slow pass to van Bommel who mistimed his kick which landed at the feet of Mathijsen who missed his shot. Robben took his shot at the Spanish goal at the end of the first half but saw it being blocked by the alert goal keeper.

The second half saw the game open up a little for both teams. Spain’s match winner against Germany, Puyol, took the aerial route once again to try and score but saw his shot go to waste. Then it was David Villa who collected a pass from Jesus Navas and looked good to score but saw his shot deflected at the last moment. Ramos was the center of attention in the 78th minute when he headed a shot from Xavi into the arms of the Dutch goal keeper.

Robben missed a golden chance to score for the Dutch in the 63rd minute after collecting a pass from Wesley Sneijder. Robben went sprinting down the track before taking his shot at the goal which was diverted by the flailing Casillas who’s leg hit the ball to send it away from the Spanish goal. Robben kept up his hectic pace throughout the match and was the man to watch for the Spanish defenders. In the 82nd minute Robben rushed past a stunned Puyol and an attacking Pique and would have scored if not for a save by Casillas at the very last minute.

Extra time was called as both teams tried hard to break through each others defences. Both teams had some good chances but were foiled by shots that went just a little wide off the mark. It was the dismissal of Hertinga on the Dutch side for pulling down Iniesta that saw the Spanish get by to score a goal in the second half of extra time. It was Iniesta who scored the winner in the last minutes of extra time to make sure that Spain would, for the first time, go home as winners of the FIFA world cup.
